History
Xcaper Industries, LLC (the “Company”), was founded by Peter Finch in 1998 to market the Xcaper smoke filter which he co-invented with Eric Ellison. They had been working on this cutting edge technology for over five years and in November 1999, they patented their smoke filter technology. Simultaneously they assigned the patent rights to the Company along with the rights to manufacture, market, and distribute any associated products.
Initially, the Company began marketing its products solely to wildland firefighters. The Company noted that unlike urban firefighters, wildland firefighters performed their duties without any protection for their lungs. During the Company’s study of the profession, it was noted that many retired firefighters were on permanent disability as a direct result of their unprotected exposure to smoke. In early 2003, the Company introduced a new filter called the "Easy Breathe". This filter allowed greater air flow and thus allowed the user to breathe much easier. While the Easy Breathe was originally developed for high altitude firefighting it has been found to be an exceptional product for respiratory protection during structural overhaul, arson investigation, and swat operations. As a result, sales of the original filter were discontinued and now the Easy Breathe is the standard for respiratory protection in wildland firefighting. Today, the Company’s professional products are used by thousands of professional firefighters in North America and Australia.
After the devastating attack on the United States on September 11, 2001, the Company saw the need to protect civilians from the dangers of terrorist attacks. Subsequently, the Company developed and introduced the Xcaper Emergency Evacuation Kit which was designed for use in evacuating high rise buildings during fires or terrorist attacks. In 2005, the Company introduced its enterprise line of products and began marketing them to businesses all over the world. To date, over 250,000 emergency kits with the Xcaper Smoke Mask are available to the employees of both large and small business enterprises.
In March 2005 Xcaper Industries was awarded a Certificate of Registration of Quality System to I.S. EN ISO 9001:2000. Since that time every Xcaper product has been manufactured in accordance with that quality standard.
In late 2006, Xcaper began work on obtaining a CE mark in order to be able to sell the Xcaper Smoke Mask in Europe. We anticipate that this standard will be awarded before the end of 2007.
In 2007, the Company began receiving requests for a consumer product for use in households. Every year in the United States there are thousand of deaths due to fire and 75% of those deaths are due to smoke inhalation. To address this market the Company has now introduced the Xcaper Consumer Smoke Mask. While as effective as the Enterprise and Professional filters, the consumer filter has a shorter shelf life (three years). However, since it is much more affordable, families may now be protected from the devastating effects of smoke during a fire.
The Company continues it program of continuous improvement of its products. Even though the Xcaper smoke filter is the most effective smoke filter available anywhere in the world, the Company continues its research and development as part of a program of continuous product improvement. Whether it is a life threatening situation or a hazardous work environment, Xcaper Industries’ revolutionary, patented filtration technology continues to provide protection against toxic gases and deadly particulates.
